What are salicylates?

Salicylates are chemicals that occur naturally in many plants, including fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices and synthetically in medications such as aspirin, perfumes, body care products, preservatives and plastics. Foods high in salicylates include many fruits and vegetables that we may consume on a regular basis such as berries, avocado, spinach, broccoli, olives, tomato and cucumber.

What is Salicylate intolerance or sensitivity?

Intolerances are different to allergies because they are usually a slow onset reaction, but that’s not always the case. An intolerance reaction is often an accumulative response and the severity of the symptoms depends on exposure duration and/or amount consumed.

The conventional treatment for intolerances is avoidance, thereby not going over the reaction threshold. This is often easier said than done as salicylates are found in so many things.

Salicylate sensitivity or salicylate intolerance symptoms are linked to:

  • Hyperactivity, irritability and aggression in children

  • Eczema, hives, dermatitis and psoriasis

  • Headaches or migraines

  • Sinus and asthma

  • Irritable bowel symptoms

  • Reflux, vomiting, stomach bloating and pain, wind, diarrhea and/or constipation

  • Joint pain and arthritis

Could this be what is causing the symptoms of your “salicylate allergy”?

I find that most people with salicylate intolerance have no idea what could be affecting them.

Research shows that about 20% of adults with asthma, 60% of people with food-induced itchy rashes, headaches or migraines, 70% of people with irritable bowel symptoms and 75% of children with behaviour problems may be sensitive to salicylates.

I would like to recommend Tomaya for her energy healing. I have had great success with treatment for Salicylate intolerance and Histamine Intolerance from her. My first treatment for Salicylates proved to be amazing, and although most people need more than one treatment, I was much improved after just one! My treatment for Histamine involved three sessions, and I found an improvement after each one. I believe with her energy healing I can now enjoy foods and drinks that before I was unable to have.

Most people don’t respond in any way when being exposed to salicylates. In fact, most of us are exposed to it everyday without any problems. For some people, however, certain allergy symptoms show up as a result of getting even a small dose of salicylate (from foods and other products containing salicylates). This condition is referred to as salicylate sensitivity or salicylate intolerance.

Thousands of people around the world have been successfully treated using this therapy. The treatment is safe and effective for people of all ages, including infants, children and the elderly.

Salicylate Intolerance Treatments at Allergy Field

Our salicylate sensitivity treatments are based on two techniques: NAET – Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Technique & IPEC – Integrated Physical Emotional Clearing. We focus on the core issues and factors that are causing the symptoms. A true treatment of salicylate allergies is not about avoidance of the substances causing the symptoms. Allergy Field is about treating the root of the problem and therefore reducing the likelihood of the symptoms from reoccurring in the future.

In Allergy Field’s experience, most people with salicylate intolerance symptoms have no idea what could be affecting them. Research shows that about 20% of adults with asthma, 60% of people with food-induced itchy rashes, headaches or migraines, 70% of people with irritable bowel symptoms and 75% of children with behaviour problems may be sensitive to salicylates.

Salicylate Sensitivity - The Blog:

Read the latest report from on a teenager's eczema after having his salicylate allergy treated

Eczema can affect us in so many ways. Physically it is often red, dry, itchy and can be flaky or oozy. Emotionally it can make us feel withdrawn, sad and depressed.  Salicylate intolerance symptoms often present as eczema. Salicylate allergy or salicylate intolerance is common, yet most people aren’t aware that it can be treated. There are so many foods that are high in salicylates, so it is very hard to avoid them completely. Those who have tried to abstain from foods high in salicylates over a long period of time would know how difficult and frustrating this process is.
I have been treating Harry for the past 4 months. Initially we did a session every week and after a few sessions I treated him once every 2-3 weeks. He has been pretty much symptom free for the past month or so. Harry is so thrilled with the results and he is happy for me to share pictures that reflect how much better his skin is. He is 17 and understandably doesn’t want me to share a picture of his face, so you won’t get to see the remarkable improvement of the eczema around his eyes. You can imagine how good they are now when you see the pictures of his arms and neck. Here is a testimonial his mother sent me describing their journey with Harry’s eczema.

I stumbled upon Tomaya by accident after researching salicylate sensitivity and eczema for my son Harry.

From a young toddler, Harry had eczema which was made worse by trigger foods such as citrus and tomatoes. So by stopping orange juice and fresh tomatoes and limiting his exposure to tomato base foods, we managed it very well until he had another challenging episode when he was 9/10 with eczema around his mouth and eyes.

This time we went down the dermatologist route and after extensive tests it showed he wasn’t allergic to any of the above but to pollen and dust mites. But I knew that although he may not be allergic as such, they were triggers which set his eczema. So this came and went and Harry coped with it and seemed to be able to control it with a washing and moisturising regime and occasional steroid cream as well as avoiding trigger foods.

Then either due to puberty, hormones or not completely controlling what he ate as a growing teenager, his eczema around his eyes, the inside of his elbows and neck became worse and obvious.

It was through research and working out triggers that we realised high salicylates and nightshades were foods that would make his eczema worse. So we introduced a low salicylate diet with a couple of off days so his body would still accept things and this worked. His eczema calmed down and he would have periods of waking up not thinking if today was going to be a good day. Then his eczema would go bad again and we would have to be strict again with the low salicylates diet and manage to get it under control. When his eczema was good, we would start introducing a couple of moderate salicylate days and his body coped ok but we mainly kept his diet to low salicylates. However all of a sudden the low salicylate diet wasn’t working anymore. It was like he was reacting to things that were ok before and now were not. Almost to the point that his diet was now so restrictive and boring. Whereas before that was enough to cause a calmness in his symptoms, it started to have no effect and now I had a young man losing confidence and becoming withdrawn. The eczema was spreading to other areas and even avoiding trigger foods was no longer working.

I would trawl through pages on the internet looking for something and read so much on salicylates and diets to follow. Then by chance I came across Tomaya’s page. I read it with interest and hope. Hope because so far there was nothing to cure salicylate sensitivity apart from having a low restrictive diet which now wasn’t working for him. This gave me hope that he could be treated and be less reactive to certain trigger foods. We really had nothing to lose. After talking to Harry, we agreed to make contact and see. I had never come across Distant Healing treatments although I was aware of what the practice was but not without the need of the patient. I was fascinated by the concept and also after reading the testimonials I was eager to give it a go.

We made contact which was quick and easy, exchanged an email and Tomaya arranged a telephone conversation in which we talked at length about Harry and his eczema, triggers, diet and how this worked, what to expect etc.

After the first consultation and assessment it came up that apart from salicylates, his body was reacting to a number of other things too. This now makes sense as to why he was still reacting whilst being so strict.

So we have now worked through some of these over a few months. And what a difference! It took time initially because Harry had many triggers but each time there was an improvement and we could introduce more foods into his diet.  Once the major ones were tackled, the change has been amazing. He is now eating a wide range of foods, from tomatoes to citrus to high salicylates and the variety of meals we can cook has increased. We are not limited to low salicylates anymore. It has been life changing. To be able to cook foods he loves and can eat and his skin has cleared up so so much. I have a boy who is no longer withdrawn but looks forward to meeting up with friends socially and enjoys eating a variety of foods.

Tomaya has been great through all this, always on hand to help or give advice or work treatments around Harry. It’s been so lovely having someone so approachable, friendly and caring. She really has made such a difference and am so grateful we found her.
