What causes eczema? – The possible causes of eczema

Have you been diagnosed with eczema or do you suspect you have eczema?

Maybe your baby or child has eczema?

Eczema is often linked to allergies and sensitivities and I’d like us to go through the possible causes of eczema.

I’ve been treating eczema for nearly 20 years and this is what my experience has taught me. The location of the eczema can give us some indication as to what is causing it.

Do you have eczema all over your body or just in some areas?

If you get eczema all over your body it is often linked to food sensitivities and allergies.

The most common culprits can be dairy, gluten, sugars, eggs, soy, salicylates and artificial preservatives, colors and flavors. [See also our Salicylate Food List]

Have you heard of salicylates before?

Salicylates are a naturally occurring chemical found in many fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and spices. Acetylsalicylic acid is what aspirin is made of.  Salicylates is a common allergen linked to eczema, asthma and hay fever like symptoms.

  • If you get eczema just on certain parts of your body, it may be a reaction to food or an environmental allergen.
  • If the eczema is on your feet, ankles and lower legs, it may be due to a reaction to grass or weeds. This is common with children who play outdoors.
  • If the eczema is behind your knees and on the inside of your elbows or in the folds of the skin for babies, it is often associated with a sensitivity or an allergy to yeast and gluten.
  • If you get little red bumps on your chest, abdomen and back, you may have an allergy to dust and dust mite or you are reacting to your laundry detergent or moisturizer.
  • If you get eczema around your eyes or on your eyelids, it can be due to food, makeup or pollen, but if it’s all over your face then it is usually food related.

Again, salicylates is a common allergen that causes eczema that is on the face and particularly around the mouth.

If you get eczema on your hands, please check what products only touch your hands. Could it be latex gloves, dishwashing detergent, cleaning chemicals or hand cream that are causing your symptoms?

Do you get eczema in areas I haven’t mentioned? Please let me know if I missed anything and I’ll reply with possible allergens that are contributing to your eczema.

I hope this gives you a bit more knowledge about what could be causing your eczema. If it is something you can avoid, then please do so and see if that makes a difference.

If it is something that is hard or impossible to avoid, please know that it can be treated.

Eczema can be so unpleasant.

It can make it hard to have a good night’s sleep due to extreme itchiness, it can easily get infected and it can make one feel very self conscious if the eczema is in visible places.

What have you done to help clear it?

I can help determine what is causing your eczema and treat it.

It doesn’t take long to see results. Here are some before and after photos of my clients.
